US & UK film job losses

Hollywood studio Paramount Pictures is to axe more than 50 jobs.

The cuts are the result of restructuring four of the company's divisions.  These include the licensing, consumer products, home entertainment and digital distribution departments.

The move will apparently save Paramount $10 million at a time when the feature-film industry is recovering from the global economic crisis.

Meanwhile, the film business in the northwest region of England has been hit by the UK government's decision to close down the national Film Council.

Vision+Media, the region's film agency supporting filmmakers' local location and production needs, has asked staff to go on a four-day week for three months. This is effective from 1 November.

Although the agency's meeting rooms will still be available for use, employees will not work on Fridays during the three months.

The cuts aim to "help us retain our diverse, highly skilled and flexible team," Vision+Media said in a statement.
