Spider-Man Director and Starz Media Weave Web-based Sci-Fi Strategy
22nd September 2010

The Resistance, a new sci-fi drama from US pay-TV group Starz
Media and a production house co-founded by Spider-Man director Sam
Raimi, is about to make history.
The show is being touted as the first drama series originally
created for the internet to be piloted on a TV network.
It is part of the multi-media strategy increasingly being used by
producers to test the possible popularity of new movies and
programmes before making major financial commitments.
Despite being produced for online distribution, the pilot for this
new show will debut on the US' Syfy TV channel at 11pm on 4
October.
According to media reports, the pilot will comprise a combination
of the eight original short webisodes, plus some extra
footage.
Alternative editions will also be available to download via
internet stores and online video-games services such as iTunes,
Amazon and Sony's PlayStation network.
The ad-financed video-streaming service Hulu, plus video-sharing
websites like Metacafe, YouTube and Dailymotion will also transmit
other short versions of The Resistance.
Depending on viewers' response, this internet series could receive
more finance for a potential TV series or even a movie.
Initially created by aspiring filmmaker Adrian Picardi as short
teasers online, The Resistance was picked up by an impressed Starz
Media and Ghost House Pictures, the production house co-founded by
Sam Raimi.
