Movies will play a central part in the UK's first 3D channel, which launches commercially on 1 October.

The Sky 3D channel, operated by Rupert Murdoch's satellite-delivered Sky TV, will also feature sports and other programme genres.

But 3D films such as Monsters Vs. Aliens, produced by Hollywood's DreamWorks Animation; Walt Disney's Bolt; Tim Burton's version of Alice In Wonderland; and the Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince will be positioned among the highlights.

To receive the channel, which had a soft launch in April, customers must be subscribers to the high-definition TV network Sky+ HD, have a 3D-compatible TV set and special glasses.

As the competition to sell 3D TVs heats up, Sky TV has also announced that it is officially endorsing the sets made by LG, the South Korean electronics-goods conglomerate.

Although customers will be able to watch Sky 3D on TVs made by other manufacturers, the LG endorsement will see the two companies set up joint marketing campaigns to promote their respective services and educate consumers about the advent and benefits of 3D technology.
