The Trailblazing Trailermade 2010 Competition: Trailers by Tomorrow's Commercial Movie Makers

New digital marketing platform joins Kodak, Pinewood Studios and Panavision to back finance-pitching contest.

London/Cannes, May 2010: LPA movingPictures, the new digital platform that markets, promotes and showcases the best and most original independent filmmakers, and the London Photographic Association (LPA) join a line-up of major international filmmaking brands to co-sponsor the Trailermade 2010 competition (www.trailermade.tv).

Co-founded by film-industry executive Becky Bazzard, Trailermade 2010 is a contest that aims to help talented emerging filmmakers find the funds for their first commercially viable feature films.

"Trailermade aims to increase the chances for filmmakers, particularly emerging talent, to attract finance for their feature film projects," Bazzard, the executive producer, says. "Emerging filmmakers find it the hardest to get their first features off the ground, especially if they do not have a track record. But successfully completing a trailer not only confirms a commitment to completing the feature, it is also a very good exercise for thinking about who their targeted audience is, and what the film is really about."

LPA movingPictures and the LPA's Contribution to the Sponsorship

As a sponsor, the LPA movingPictures, which launches on 12 May (See Press Release) on www.lpa-movingpictures.com, is providing the digital distribution and marketing platform for the winning trailers.

And its sister organisation the LPA is supplying the professional photographers who took the high-quality publicity shots to market the winners' works.

Kevin O'Connor, director and co-founder of LPA movingPictures and the LPA, says: "Last September, we were introduced to the producer Anita Lewton (co-founder of Corazon Films UK), which is when we first heard of the Trailermade project. It is  a perfect fit for both the LPA and LPA movingPictures as we can  involve our stills-photography members to publicise and network the completed trailers."

He continues: "Our raison d'être is to show and help promote our members and this is the perfect project for us to get behind. I take my hat off to Becky Bazzard, who is the energy behind Trailermade."

Bazzard adds: "The LPA and LPA movingPictures have given the winning Trailermade 2010 teams the opportunity to work alongside professional stills photographers and the exposure to the industry through their soon-to-launch LPA movingPictures, greatly improves the winners' chances of gaining interest in their various projects."

The LPA's Creative Contribution to the Marketing Campaign

The three LPA members who supplied their stills-photography skills for the Trailermade winners' publicity campaign are:

David Edmunds, LPA movingPictures' creative director, also invited Damian Rimmer, an advertising post-production specialist, to be the stills post-production consultant for the trailers' publicity shots.

Edmunds and Rimmer worked with the photographers and the trailers' directors for the desired end result.

"Damian developed the visual poster ideas and designs for two of the films," Edmunds explains. "This was a unique project in that, as the filmmakers are relatively new to the business, we were able to have greater creative input, with no restrictions on the sets.  Such an open brief on the photography all goes towards creating a more interesting, less committee-orientated final solution," Edmunds said.

Big-name Sponsors Turn Trailermade 2010 into a Reality

In addition to LPA movingPictures and the LPA, the completion of the trailers was possible thanks to the backing of and the resources supplied by leading and award-winning industry brand names.

The other major co-sponsors include Kodak, the photography and film-manufacturing giant; international film-equipment maker Panavision; and the legendary Pinewood Studios Group, the world's biggest film studio outside Hollywood.

The scheme is also supported by the UK Film Centre at the International Pavilion at this year's Cannes Film Festival (12-23 May), where the winners' films will be showcased.

Bazzard explains the sponsors' invaluable role: "The sponsors have been instrumental to the success of the Trailermade scheme. Their professionalism, generosity and expertise have allowed the three winning teams to produce work to be proud of, and of a high standard that deserves to be showcased to the industry."

How the Trailermade 2010 Winners Were Selected

To qualify, the contestants had to have made at least two short films that had been shown around international festival circuits. They had to shoot in Super 16mm film supplied by Kodak.

The Prize

The three winners' works will be showcased at the Cannes Film Festival. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to meet movie-industry financiers face-to-face at a specially organised 90-minute panel session.

They will then be invited to pitch and gain valuable feedback for funding before a panel of these financiers.

Similar showcases are planned at the Trailer Festival (June 10) in Los Angeles and in London.
