Maverick documentary-makers specialising in films about art have up until 5:00pm on 18 October to submit entries for this year's Reel Art competition in Ireland.

Supported by Ireland's Arts Council in association with the country's filmmakers' network Filmbase, Reel Art invites proposals that need finance to complete production. The three finalists will receive a grant of up to €80,000 each.

Once selected, the successful entries must be completed on or before 1 December 2011. And the chosen films will premiere at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival (JDIFF) in February 2012.

According to the Reel Art website, "only proposals for original, imaginative and aesthetically-driven treatments of arts subjects will be considered, while proposals that offer visually engaging, creative and experimental approaches to their subject will be prioritised".

Introduced in 2008, Reel Art's mission is to create opportunities and openings for unconventional art documentaries that are unlikely to be considered for mainstream feature-film or broadcast competitions. The entries must be created for cinema distribution, not television.

Previous Reel Art grant recipients include Conor Horgan, director of The Beholder, which was screened at this year's JDIFF.
