Hollywood star Tom Hanks' production company Playtone is to co-produce a web-based animation series with India's Reliance Big Entertainment.

Called Electric City, the series will be conceived, developed and written by Playtone, which Hanks co-owns with business partner Gary Goetzman.

Electricity has been described as a 20-episode three-minute futuristic series. It takes an optimistic view of hard-hitting issues such as crime, the environment and freedom of information.

Mumbai-based Reliance is producing the series. It will provide the digital expertise to distribute Electric City online via Zapak, its video-games development division.

Reliance, one of Bollywood's biggest producers and wealthiest media conglomerates, is well known for its Hollywood ambitions. It is financing a slate of international films by Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks studio to the tune of a reported $325 million.
