The Social Network, the highly anticipated movie about the founders of Facebook, the biggest internet phenomenon to date, opens the 48th New York Film Festival.

The film, described by one critic as "a 21st century moral tale", tracks the origins of the social network that already boasts 500 million members and its enigmatic but controversial founder Mark Zuckerberg.

It is directed by David Fincher, who is renowned for making some of the Brad Pitt's best movies (Se7en; Fight Club; and The Curious Tale of Benjamin Button).

The festival will close with Hereafter, Clint Eastwood's latest opus about near-death experiences starring Matt Damon.

Taking place from on 24 September to 10 October, the festival will feature 28 films chosen by the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

They include Carlos, by Olivier Assayas; The Tempest, by Julie Taymor; Another Year, by Mike Leigh; and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall Past Lives, the Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or winner by Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
